Four to six weeks before

Confirm your settlement date, moving date and when you will receive the new keys.
Book the mover, truck or helpers and confirm what is insured while in transit.
Measure large furniture and doorways at the new home before moving day.
Sort what will move, be sold, donated, recycled or disposed of.
Arrange storage if the two settlement dates do not line up.
Start a box of documents, valuables, medicines and essentials that stays with you.

Two to three weeks before

Tell your insurer about both homes, the move, storage and any period when a home will be empty.
Arrange mail redirection and update banks, employers, schools, subscriptions and important services.
Book final cleaning, rubbish removal and any required carpet or garden work.
Use up frozen food, fuel and other items movers may not carry.
Photograph valuable belongings and make a simple moving inventory.
Confirm plans for children, pets, access, parking and lifts on moving day.

Utilities and facilities

Arrange transfers or final readings with each provider. Do not physically disconnect services the property still needs for settlement, alarms, pumps, refrigeration or safety.

Electricity: arrange the final reading or account transfer for the correct date.
Gas or LPG: arrange the account change and confirm what happens to rented bottles.
Broadband and phone: book the move or cancellation and return any provider-owned equipment.
Water: check whether a final meter reading or account update is needed in your area.
Solar, battery or EV charging: transfer monitoring access, service records and instructions safely.
Security monitoring: end or transfer the service and remove your personal access after handover.
Shared facilities or body corporate: update access cards, bookings, parking and contact details.
Council services: check bins, rates correspondence and any local collection arrangements.

The final week

Confirm the mover, addresses, arrival window, parking and payment method.
Pack and label one essentials box for the first night.
Back up important computer files and charge phones, power banks and tools.
Set aside keys, remotes, manuals and items that must stay with the property.
Check the sale agreement before removing fixtures or listed chattels.
Photograph meter readings and the condition of both homes where appropriate.

Moving day and handover

Do a final room-by-room, cupboard, garage, roof-space and outdoor check.
Remove rubbish and leave the property reasonably clean and clear.
Check windows, doors, taps, appliances and anything agreed to remain.
Leave only the keys, remotes, manuals and handover material agreed with your agent or lawyer.
Keep medicines, valuables, documents, chargers and the essentials box with you.
Confirm settlement before releasing keys or access unless your lawyer has told you otherwise.
